Introduction

Hello, welcome to the start of my Multimedia Design and Development Blogfolio. My name is Kristina Quintini, and I am 23 years old and was born and raised in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi. I transferred to the University of Southern Mississippi in the fall of 2008 after receiving an associate degree in business. I am currently classified as a senior Sport and Business Management major.  With my degree I plan to sell pharmaceuticals when I graduate May 13, 2011.

I was supposed to graduate in December of 2010, but I decided to stay back and really prepare myself for my life outside of college. I knew if I was going to stick around I wanted to take a few classes that would help me in the future.  Being that IT 469 is a multimedia class that would instruct me on how to use Web 2.0 I knew it was the right class for me.  Technology is steadily advancing and I wanted to keep up with the movement.  That is how I ended up in Dr.Yuen’s IT469 class.

Throughout the semester, I documented my learning experiences in IT 469. For each of my eight assignments I was to write a reflection about what I learned, if I enjoyed using the application, etc. From the first day of class when I meet Dr. Yuen and was introduced to the class I knew I was going to love the class and enjoy reflecting on what I had accomplished.

I hope you enjoy reading and viewing everything I have done in this class. I was excited to have accomplished all the great things Dr. Yuen taught me in IT 469. I encourage you to learn from my blogs on how to use the applications so you can have as much fun as I did.

Assignment 8: Jing

My last assignment was to create a series of screen captures and create a video. I had to capture at least 5 images and create 1 video no longer than 5 minutes. I first had to download Jing, a free application to my computer. When signing up for my Jing account it automatically signs me up for Screencast. Screencast is a website that allows one to save and share work online. After completion of my assignment I was to post it to mixxt.com our social online network.

My images are showing you different things on my facebook page. Using this tool allowed me to capture images and record a video so clearly. Creating a video allowing me to record online text was very interesting. I know it is something I will use in my career in the future. I was astonished at everything Jing could do.

Jing was something I had never heard of before. It was the coolest application I felt I had used all semester. It was very innovative; I had never seen anything like it. I will definitely use this tool again and suggest it to others. I really enjoyed this assignment and am very appreciative to have gotten introduced to Jing. This tool can be very effective to those in the business field. I recently decided to use Jing for a project in my tourism management class. My group members are very impressed on what I showed them. I feel my professor and fellow classmates will enjoy what I have created. Jing is an application for all ages and I recommend that others should start using this tool.

Overall IT 469 Class Reflection

I feel I have learned a great deal of useful information from Dr. Yuen IT 469 class. Being that I am a Sport Management I was not required to take IT 469. I got cold feet in December and decided to roll my graduation over until May. I spoke with a few people around campus about what classes I should take that could benefit me in the future. Mrs. Jewl Adams, which had previously taken the class, showed me examples of the projects she did last semester. I though the class was a perfect way for me to learn more about web 2.0. Web 2.0 has become dominate in our world today. After speaking with Jewl  who works in the HPR office I decided I would take the class and hope for the best since I wasn’t and IT major.

In this class I was required to do eight assignments. These assignments were all free applications that I can access and use in the future.  Learning the fundamentals that went along with each assignment was a fun experience. Providing students with free applications that we can use in the future helps us reach one step closer to success. I feel all the assignments benefited me in some way or another, even JayCut which was the only assignment I disliked. After completion of the assignments I was able to master each application well enough that I could use it on my own and teach others how to use the tool.

One of my most favorite things about Dr. Yuen’s class was that we were required to use his course social network on Mixxt.com. This website was very effective and easy to use. It was very similar to using facebook. The social network contained all the resources we needed for the course. I was able to access all course material for the class online. Our syllabus, lecture notes, assignment information, and course schedule was all located on our home page. It was great because if you are working online and you lost or didn’t have your assignment sheet near you could sign online and see what to do. Also, if you missed a class or just forgot how to use an application the lecture notes were available at all times The lecture notes were very detailed and guided you through the whole assignment. Not only was there course material on the site but it was where we turned in all our assignments. We were able to post our assignment while also, getting to comment and communicate with our fellow classmates. Mixxt was very easy to use and was defiantly user friendly. I wish other professors would use this website instead of blackboard which to me was at times very confusing.

Overall, I absolutely love the class and suggest others to take the course whether their IT majors or not. Dr. Yuen is an amazing professor. His enthusiastic bubbly personality had me eager to learn. Every day in his class was full of adventure and excitement. He is a very caring and helpful person that will tend to your needs and help you in any way possible. I am thankful Mrs. Jewl encouraged me to take this course because I know now how to access and use several very cool free online applications. I am also thankful to have had the privilege to have such an excellent professor. IT 469 became my key into learning a lot about Web 2.0 applications and has been such a memorable and beneficial experience I will value forever.

Assignment 7: GoAnimate

Assignment 7 was to create an animation using Fuzzwich. After I had created and finished my project early the site was obviously deleted. Dr. Yuen had me re-create my animation using GoAnimate.com. It was to consist of 2 characters. These characters had to have appropriate actions, faces, and speech bubbles to go with the theme of my choice. Upon completion I embedded my GoAnimate animation to our social network on mixxt.com.

GoAnimate had a great number of things I could do with my animation the Fuzzwich did not have. The cartoon I created was called ‘The Sleepy Shopper’. I love to shop and will stop anything I’m doing to go shopping. It shows a female character sleeping having a great dream and then her husband comes and tries to wake her up. She first gets an attitude then he mentions that its shopping day and she hops out of bed cheering.

I loved using GoAnimate.com. It was a very fun tool that allowed me to really personalize my animation. Providing me with so many different features to use I got to allow my imagination to run wild. I can’t wait to show my nephew this application because he will have a blast creating his own animation. I will defiantly suggest this free tool to others and inspire them to use it. My experience using GoAnimate was very fun and I’m glad Fuzzwich shut down because I got the opportunity to be introduced to this site.

Assignment 6: Movie Maker

Assignment 6 Dr. Yuen had us create a digital video with Movie Maker. Movie Maker is an application in which one can download if not already installed on their computer for free. I was to create a story with Windows Movie Maker. The story consists of a title side, an ending slide, a minimum of 10 pictures and a video clip on a specific theme. Dr.Yuen provided us with a easy link to convert our videos to the proper format. Narration was required to guide viewers through the pictures I used.  Lastly, I had to upload my video to Youtube adding a description, tags, title, category, date, and map it.

My story was about my best friend Jerami Goodman life as a New Orleans Saintsation.  I had previously used Movie Maker in one of my Sport Management classes so making my video was trouble-free. The assignment  took about an hour to complete. That included figuring out what I wanted to do, converting my videos, and uploading my media. I felt my movie came out great and allowed people to get to know my best friend and other half, Jerami.

The assignment was memorable. I will always be able to sign on Youtube and view the video I created. I love using Movie Maker. This tool will come in very handy while in school and in the future. I would suggest everyone to try it out. I plan to obtain a job in pharmaceutical sales when I graduate. It will be an innovative advantage to create a digital video for potential buyers about my product. I will continue using Moive Maker and are thankful for Dr. Yuen showing me new ways to use and navigate the program.

Assignment 5: JayCut

Assignment 5 was for me to create a video using an online streaming tool called JayCut. It had to consist of at least 2 digital videos recorded with a digital camera or digital camcorder. I was required to then edit my video clip adding scenes, transitions, opening title, and closing credits. Lastly, I had to post it to our class website mixxt.com.

Uploading my video clips and other media was a breeze and then came the hard part. Trying to edit my video got very frustrating. The transitions would show up randomly and the music would start at different spots every time I tried to play it. Since it is an online tool and streams the footage it took forever to preview the video to make needed corrections. I ended up creating about 10 videos trying to get it to look decent. Due to how slow it took to processes, this assignment took me several hours. I actually had to give up one day and finish it the next.

Not being able to look at the video while creating it made the process very time consuming. I did not enjoy this project and got very flustered while doing it. I had several problems with JayCut and would never suggest it to anyone else. I like to have my work as perfect as I possibly can and this online application made that impossible. I really disliked this assignment and will never use JayCut again now or in the future.

Assignment 4: Animoto

Assignment 4, we were to create an online presentation with Animoto. Animoto is a web application that produces videos from user-selected photos, video clips and music. “In the works since 2005, Animoto was founded to help people better share their stories and express themselves through online media by innovating technologies in the field of video production. Using the latest in entertainment post-production technologies, Animoto is designed to bridge the gap between the high production value of film and television, and the more "amateur" feeling of most user-created videos and photo albums” ("Animoto - About the Company." Animoto - Video Slideshow Maker with Music. Web. 06 Apr. 2011. http://animoto.com/about/).

Learning about Animoto was very brief. We had to create, import, or scan 10 photo images of our choice. Next, we modified these pictures in Picnik to begin creating our online presentation with Animoto. I had to pick a style for my video from the many options they provided. I picked “coming up roses” for the theme of my online presentation.

I really liked and enjoyed this assignment. My presentation came out really cute. I loved sharing it with my family. I will suggest this free web 2.0 application to others. I will definitely use this in the future to impress friends, family, and co-workers. Animoto took me only 30min. to start and complete. I am really happy Dr. Yuen informed me about this valuable tool.

Assignment 3: Audacity

Assignment 3, required us to create and edit and audio recording using a downloadable application called Audacity. Audacity is an audio recording and mixing tool. I am a dancer and I always wanted to learn how to cut and mix my own music. I was told before that you had to buy a CD that you download to your computer that cost lost of money. When Dr. Yuen introduced me to Audacity I was in shock because it was exactly what I had been searching for only it was Free!

Learning about Audacity was a fun experience. He showed me the ends and outs of how to work and navigate this tool. After much explaining I realized this application was not only free, but it was extremely easy to use. We were required to create a audio CD of our choice. I decided to make my wedding day CD. Our recording had to have at least 3 audio clips joined and mixed together. The audio had to last at least 2 to 5 minutes with attributes (32 bit, stereo, 44,100 Hz sample rate). Also, we had to created another audio file in mp3 format (128kps, stereo, 22,050 Hz sample rate). The final audio file had to be written to a CD in an Audio CD format using a CD burning software.

Ever since I was a little girl I dreamed of one of the happiest times of my life. That’s why I chose to do my wedding day CD. The day I would comment to spending my life with the man of my dreams. Over the years I’ve planned out my every desire for my future wedding. I want it to be memorable and everlasting. The CD I created will help create those memories. I recorded my voice at the beginning describing what my CD was about any why I chose to do something like this. After, I joined several clips of songs that I will play on the day one of my biggest dreams comes true, my wedding day.  <3

Overall, my Audacity experience will be something I will remember and use forever. This tool was quick and easy to download and use. I will defiantly be suggesting Audacity to others. It has become such a benefit to me on my dance team. We no longer have to look days in search of someone to make a mix for us. I LOVE Audacity and will continue to use it in the future. I highly recommend this to people who love dance, music, and the arts. If you’re a person like me that only likes certain parts of a song this is a GREAT way to cut out the parts you don’t like and have a CD of your favorite music clips.
